"The attraction is that when one takes photographs, one is obliged to adjust one's focus to a relatively small organism, like a flower, one is obliged, as it were, to look as an insect does." Albert Renger-Patzsch Renger-Patzsch began his career as a photographer in the photographic department of the Folkwang Verlag (known as Auriga after 1924), which was led by Ernst Fuhrmann, Renger-Patzsch's spiritual mentor. The main focus of his work after 1921 was plant photography: uncontrived, revealingly precise representations of plant forms. Individual plant photographs by Renger-Patzsch, made between 1922 and 1925 during his time at Folkwang/Auriga, are known from the epoch-making volume of photographs, Die Welt ist schön [The World is Beautiful]. Now in The World of Plants, for the first time readers can see - in its entirety and in its original context - this early highpoint in Renger-Patzsch's output. Around 120 vintage prints reveal his meticulous interest in plants. Highest quality visual material from public and private collections plus prints from the Auriga Archive together with works from the early years of this pioneer of 'Neue Sachlichkeit' provide a rich framework for these incunabula of the history of photography. The artist: Albert Renger-Patzsch (Würzburg 1897 - 1966 Wamel bei Soest) 1919-1921 Studied chemistry.
